Theme:

*The narrator came back to his old house after 25 years. It is now owned by a colonel. He was glad to see that the jackfruit tree was still standing beside the house. He met the colonel’s little daughter there.

* He shared some of his childhood memories with her. He said that he used to keep some of his treasures in the hollow of the jackfruit tree. He mentioned his grandfather’s iron cross. He got it from a German soldier when he fought in France during the World War I.

* He was unable to climb the tree. The little girl climbed and found the iron cross. He gifted it to her. He said that he came there for finding his lost youth not for the iron cross.

Moral: Things end but memories last forever.
