    Ø   The train passed the bridges and the Island of Salcette. It got into the open country.

    Ø   The train crossed the mountains and moved along well-cultivated country.

    Ø   The train passed along cotton, coffee, nutmeg, clove and pepper plantations. It crossed temples with superb architecture.

    Ø   Snakes and tigers fled at the sight of the train. Elephants stood gazing at the speeding train.

   Ans:  There was no railway line beyond that place. So the train stopped in the middle of the forest.

 2. Why was Sir Francis angry?

   Ans:  The tickets were sold from Bombay to Calcutta. But there was no railway line for fifty miles up to Allahabad. So Sir Francis was angry.

   Ans:  Fogg chose to go on foot.

   Ans:  Mr. Fogg offered to pay two thousand pounds for the elephant. So the elephant owner was happy with the deal.

   Ans:  The elephant driver was a young man with an intelligent face. He was a skilled man. He covered the elephant’s back with a saddle cloth. He attached howdahs to its side.

 1. What qualities of Mr. Phileas Fogg are highlighted in this extract? Support your answer with suitable examples.

   Ans:  Mr. Phileas Fogg is optimistic. The delay in the travel does not dishearten him. He is ready to go on foot. Then he decides to hire an elephant. When the elephant owner refuses to oblige him Mr. Fogg gives him two thousand pounds and buys the elephant. He is not discouraged by any obstacle. He foresees delay in the travel. Mr. Fogg is hopeful that he could reach Calcutta in time.
