  Read and understand:

A. Answer the following questions:

1.   Can courage be developed suddenly? Why?
     Ans: No, courage cannot be developed suddenly. It is inborn and ingrained in us. It is deep-seated in the soul.
 
2.   When should we have courage?
     Ans: We should always have courage with us. One who strives for a distant goal should have courage in his goal.
 
3.   Give an example for dazzling light.
     Ans:The flash of lightning at night is an example for dazzling light.
 
4.   Can a courageous man be defeated? Why?
      Ans:Yes, a courageous man can be defeated because courage is written in victory and defeat.
 
5.   What is the ‘breath of life’?
      Ans:Courage is the ‘breath of life’.
 
6.   What are the characteristics of a courageous man?
     Ans: A courageous man has courage deep in his soul. His courage is always with him. It is inborn and ingrained in him. Courage is a part and parcel of a brave man. It is the basis for victory and defeat. It is at the back of smiles and tears.
 

 
B. Read the following lines and answer the questions:
 
1.   It isn’t an instantaneous thing
Born of despair with a sudden spring
    a) What does ‘it’ refer to?
             ‘It’ refers to courage.
    b) What does ‘born of despair’ mean?
              It means ‘emerge from hopelessness’.
 
2.   It’s a slow, unwavering. Ingrained trait
   With the patience to work and the strength to wait.
    a) What is an ‘ingrained trait’?
             Courage is an ingrained trait.
    b) Why does a courageous man need patience?
             Any kind of work needs a long time to finish. So a courageous man needs patience to finish it successfully.
 
3.   It’s part of his hours, his days and his years,
   Back of his smiles and behind his tears.
a) What does ‘tears’ mean?
             ‘Tears’ means sorrowful incidents which make us cry.
 

 
 
C. Work in pairs and answer the following:
